Funny Horror Movies are like the joy of my life. I love ridiculous horror films, the kind that make you laugh rather than scream – especially when you can tell they're really trying to be scary, and it just doesn't happen. Some funny horror movies know they're poking fun at themselves, so if you watch closely, you can pick up all kinds of campy hints and inside jokes. Take a look at the funny horror movies listed below if you're looking for both a scream and a laugh!
This is one of the most ludicrous funny horror movies I've ever seen. To give you an idea of what you can expect, if you haven't seen it, the Chiodos brothers, who did the effects on films like Elf, Team America: World Police, and Ernest Scared Stupid, both wrote the screenplay and directed the movie. If you have a fear of clowns … this might actually cure it!
This movie tends to pop up whenever I talk about horror movies. I can't help it. Peter Jackson just hit it out of the ballpark. As if the rat monkeys aren't enough, the idea of infected zombies nastily doing the nasty will get you. Oh, this movie!
Actually, all the films in the Leprechaun franchise qualify as funny horror movies. They're just … the Leprechaun is creepy crazy. And he's funny – I've never seen such a vulgar character. If you want a seriously ludicrous movie, though, check out Leprechaun in the Hood. Yes, it's a real movie. Warwick Davis, one of my favorite actors, is more famous now for playing both Professor Flitwick and Griphook in the Harry Potter movies, but he's just … wow. He's great as the Leprechaun. (P.S. Yes, that is also Jennifer Aniston.)
This is an oldie but a goodie. It has the best twist ever. Ever. I don't want to ruin it for you, because this is kind of a cult classic – a bad one, true, no one ever really talks about it – but if you love classically bad films, just see it. And tell me what you think of the twist!
You can't discuss funny horror movies without talking about Ed Wood's work. This cult classic is just … oh, it's awful. I've rhapsodized about it once already, because it really is a great movie. It's weird, it's horrible, and it's absolutely genius. Ever spot the pillows in the cemetery?
If you love Stephen King, you've probably seen this movie, with its comic styled genius. From cockroaches to fratricide to meteorites, it filled with classic King humor. There are plenty of chills along the way as well.
This funny horror movie was meant to be funny, of course. Since zombies have become the new big thing, it was bound to do big. It's a great play on zombie movies, but the thing is, it also pays homage to the genre. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, and that's really my favorite part.
This movie, I admit, still creeps me out. It's more of a 50s horror flick homage, but those worms are just … ick! I hate those creepy crawlers! Kevin Bacon's stellar in this film, which really should have stood alone. The sequels are just awful!
No one does funny horror movies like Tim Burton. Beetlejuice is one of my favorite movies ever. It must be scary, because I recall wanting to see it during a sleepover when I was 10 (for the 100th time), and my sleepover-buddy's family flipped out over how scary it was. Really?
I really love this movie. It's beautiful and creepy and funny all at once. If you're into vampire love stories, this is the one you should see. It's totally macabre, but it knows exactly what it's doing – and the British humor is always on track!
Some of my favorite funny horror movies are the ones that don't take themselves seriously. Don't get me wrong, though. I definitely get a laugh out of those special funny horror movies that think they're being entirely scary. However, there's always something slightly awkward about them. What are some of your favorite funny horror movies? Let me know if they're intentionally or unintentionally funny!
