If you’re a fan of chick flicks, no doubt you’ll be interested in the new romantic comedies for 2013 you can look forward to. As we know, a good romcom has the ability to make us laugh and reach for the box of tissues, and we need to be prepared for both, so which romantic comedies for 2013 will be hitting our movie theaters soon?
Warning – videos may contain spoilers.
Shakespeare’s sharp witted comedy gets the Joss Whedon (Buffy) treatment and is one of the highly anticipated romantic comedies for 2013. Filmed in just 12 days and set to hit the cinemas in June, Whedon’s version has been updated to be a comedy drama set in a 21st Century house party and wedding, rather than its 16th Century villa in Tuscany original. Features a hot young cast, including some of Whedon’s regular favorites.
Not out until October over the pond, we’re bound to be bombarded with trailers for The Big Wedding. It has a tried and tested plot: a divorced couple – played by Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton – pretend to still be married at their offspring’s wedding. We wait with bated breath to see whether a stellar cast that includes Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, Susan Sarandon, Topher Grace and Amanda Seyfried can make something of a story that can be pretty old hat.
One of the new romcoms for 2013 bound to cause a stir, is the latest offering from British genius Richard Curtis (Love Actually). Rachel McAdams stars in her second romcom with a time travel theme alongside Domnhall Gleeson as Tim (familiar to you as Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter movies and the real life son of Brendan Gleeson, who plays Mad-Eye Moody). When Tim learns from his father he has the family trait of all male members by being able to go back in time, no doubt many adventures will ensue. Release date is May 10.
Turning the American Pie theme on its head, in this new Zac Efron movie (need any more reasons why this is one of the most looked-forward to romantic comedies for 2013?), three New York buddies vow to avoid sex, and then most inconveniently all begin to fall in love. There’s no release date yet as the film is still in post-production.
This might be re-billed as Don Jon’s Addiction. Another of the new romcoms for 2013 scheduled for an October release, Don Jon is the directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer). JGL wrote the screenplay and is also the male lead, playing a womanizer who reforms his ways through entanglements with Julianne Moore and Scarlett Johansson.
If you like your romantic comedies with a good dollop of crude and plenty of cringe-worthy moments, this is probably the one for you. Brandy, played by Aubrey Plaza, missed out on sexual shenanigans at high school because she was a grade A student concentrating on her studies. Prior to going to college she compiles a sexual “to do list.” Set in the early '90s, if the script and action don’t live up to the hype, at least there’ll be comedic value in the fashions and the pre-Internet teen world. The To Do List is released in August.
This has just been released in Australia so it should be hitting other countries in a matter of weeks if it hasn’t already done so. Featuring the debut of former Boyzone singer Ronan Keating, unusually it is his female co-star who has the singing role. While James (Keating) is away saving whales his wife, played by Laura Michelle Kelly, becomes an Internet sensation with her songs delivered in her kitchen and she has to make the ultimate choice – family or fame?
Which of these new romantic comedies for 2013 are you looking forward to most?
